However, trees are living creatures themselves and need regular care to remain healthy throughout their lives. If they are neglected they can become diseased or dangerous.

Over time, a tree may have to be cut down due to disease or because of structural instability that develops over time. Trees are also susceptible to fungal or insect infestation which can be fatal if not treated. In short - trees need regular attention to ensure that they remain healthy and looking their best.

People are busy, and it can be difficult to maintain your trees and shrubs regularly, since it is a time commitment and also requires expertise and experience. General tree care

It's tough on trees to be in an urban or suburban environment. It's not where they were intended to be, and they haven't yet evolved to be surrounded by buildings and busy roads. In these artificial environments, it's often the case that trees and shrubs just don't get the light or nutrition they need - often they did not pick the spot where they have been planted. This can cause problems, undermining the health of the tree, reducing its growth or altering its natural growing patterns and structure, and making it more susceptible to disease. Some of these issues can be mitigated at the time a tree is planted, but often tree care is only available once the tree has been established. Either way, expert and professional advice and treatment is the best way to maximize the health, longevity and appearance of your trees and shrubs.

Paterson Tree Care's professional arborists have long experience with local trees and shrubs, as well as the local weather patterns and typical soils for the region. They also understand how to evaluate the plant's surroundings, taking into account natural and man-made structures, such as hills or buildings that could influence light and shade on the plant as well as rainfall distribution. They can evaluate the overall health of your trees and shrubs, looking at its condition above the ground as well as the health of its underground roots.

After determining the plant's health, our arborists can determine a treatment plan that is best suited to the plant's needs while also including choices that complement your landscape or garden ideas and keep within your budget constraints.

Types of tree care

Picture

There are many aspects to keeping trees healthy and at their best. We offer all of them and it's important that clients are aware that they can form part of an overall tree care plan.

Disease and Insect Management: In most cases we are able to eradicate insects and cure tree diseases, as long as we have come across any infestation or disease at an early enough stage. Otherwise it's a question of managing the problem so that it does not prove fatal to the tree or spread to surrounding trees. Routine maintenance helps with this since it provides an opportunity for us to check the plants on a regular basis. As with many things, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure!

Nutrient and Soil Assessment and Fertilization: In order to assess the issues affecting the health of a plant, it can be useful to analyze samples of soil taken from around the plant. This can show incompatibilities in soil chemistry and deficiency of particular nutrients that the plant needs to thrive. Sometimes the soil can be remediated by changing the pH of the soil. This can be done locally around the plant or over a larger area, depending on the client's plans for the landscape in that part of the garden. Alternatively, we can propose planting different plants that might be better suited to that soil and that location. We will always work with the client to get the best outcome in terms of timing, budget and end result.

Root Care: It's easy to ignore the roots of a tree since they're more difficult to see, but of course they are a vital part of the plant and their health is determinative of the plant's overall condition. It's in the roots that we will often see early signs of infestation or disease, so keeping an eye on and below the ground can give us a head start in warding off problems that may be coming down the pike. Acting early can make a huge difference in the outcome for the plant and for the landscaping as a whole.

Tree Stabilization: With increasingly intense weather, it often makes sense to protect trees that are young or old or otherwise susceptible to wind or rain damage. Particularly for tall or more brittle trees (certain pines, black walnuts and the like), stabilization through trimming and limb removal, or through cabling, can be a smart option. Not only does it reduce the risk of the tree falling, and falling on a home or business premises, but it can save the tree. Healthy trees are generally more stable, so an overall tree care program can go a long way to ensuring that trees are able to survive whatever Mother Nature throws at them.

Tree pruning and tree trimming

All of us go through an untidy state as we're growing up. Some of us never recover, and without a bit of care and attention very few do. Trees are the same - they may thrive but won't always grow the way we want them to. Like good habits, a regular practice of pruning or trimming will always get the best results. Not only is pruning important for the appearance of the tree or shrub, but regular pruning is far less disruptive to the tree's systems, and also enables the tree's structure to be maintained over time, resulting in a healthier and more stable specimen that looks better and may well last longer.

As trees get older, it's normal for their structures to become off-balance, which can affect the integrity of the main body of the tree or certain limbs. This can often be remedied by tree trimming, where certain limbs are removed or in some cases encouraged to grow in different directions.

Paterson Tree Care arborists know the growing patterns of most local trees and shrubs and how to prune and trim them to keep them in the right shape as they develop. Before pruning or trimming, it's important to assess the type and age of the tree as well as the past growth pattern and the plasticity or flexibility of the tree going forward. This assessment will include the overall health of the tree and any other relevant considerations. We'll take off weak or dead branches as well as some healthy branches that need to be removed to create a coherent and stable structure, which can have a strong positive effect on the health, stability and appearance of the tree.

Pruning a tree properly needs a mixture of art and science - a strong understanding of the biology of trees and the way they grow, as well as an eye for symmetry and positioning of the tree within the overall landscape. If it sounds difficult, that's because it is. We just happen to have the experience and technique to be very good at it.

Tree felling and removal

Picture
Trees, while beautiful, don't last for ever. It's sad but true that a tree must ultimately perish. This might happen because it has been broken or has succumbed to devastating disease or insect attack, or simply as a result of old age. Paterson Tree Care has extensive experience in tree cutting and stump removal using state of the art techniques to provide the result the client requires to the client's schedule and budget.

Cutting down a tree is not a simple project. The tree has to be carefully evaluated before felling, taking into account the size and type of tree, its location and the weather prevailing at the time of the felling. Our arborists will develop an appropriate strategy to protect any surrounding property, and ensure that the tree is felled in such a way as to maximize safety for our staff and our client's family, employees and property, including adjacent trees. We are also very aware that a felled tree is often a greater nuisance than a standing one, so we plan the segmenting and removal of the felled tree in order to ensure that the job and the cleanup is completed as efficiently and as quickly as possible.

There are a number of factors that we consider carefully before starting any tree removal:
  • Age, Size and species of the tree. Taller trees can be more difficult to remove as can trees that have brittle or weaker limbs.

  • Where the tree is located, taking into account surrounding buildings and other trees, power lines, roads and other man-made structures. Often it is not only the main body of the tree that can cause an issue if it is felled incorrectly. Some tree branches are very large and heavy, and could cause substantial damage if they were to fall in an unexpected way. Busy roads or thoroughfares can also require more planning to make the tree removal safe and efficient.

  • Clients often have a specific idea of what trees should be removed and this is driven by their view of what is required for safety as well as their vision for their garden or yard. We liaise closely with the client to ensure that we understand their expectations, and that they understand the options available for that particular situation. Sometimes trees can be trimmed rather than felled, and sometimes more trees need to be felled to contain disease or to ensure the safety of surrounding buildings. We also work with each client to understand their timing and budget needs.

  • Different jobs require different equipment, depending on the size of the tree and ease of access of equipment to the tree for felling it or segmenting it after it has been felled. Narrow or difficult approaches to the tree such as steep or heavily curved driveways or restricted height can require more complicated approaches, different equipment or more crew to complete the job efficiently and safely.

Stump removal - to grind or not to grind?

After a tree has been felled, the tree stump will remain. Some clients like the stump as a reminder of the tree that used to be there, and it can be incorporated as an interesting feature of the garden or yard. But while it can be a fun table for a picnic for a while, eventually it will attract insects such as termites that can transform it into a nest of hazards for surrounding trees and buildings. The remaining stump can also be unattractive and make it more difficult for other trees or shrubs to be planted to replace the removed tree.

Tree stumps can be removed completely, or they can be ground down to below grade, meaning that they will not be visible, and will slowly rot away. There are a couple of considerations to take into account in deciding which route to choose.

Depending on the age and size of the tree that was felled, removing a tree stump can be a major task, involving heavy equipment. Tree roots are often surprisingly large and deep, especially if the tree was tall and healthy. In some cases it is not practicable to remove all the roots, since they spread over a large area. However, in most cases the main part of the root can be pulled and removed which enables replacement trees to be planted.
Picture
Grinding down a tree stump is often a quicker process, and depending on the location of the stump, this can be achieved quickly using the right grinding equipment. The stump will be ground down to below ground level, so that there will be no sign that the tree was ever there. The remaining root will decay over a period of time - in some cases this can be many years. Many clients, particularly homeowners, will opt for grinding down the stump and so long as they do not intend to put another tree in exactly that spot, this will be fine!

Paterson Tree Care has long experience in tree stump removal and we can advise you on what would be the best course of action taking into account your timing, budget and plans for your garden.
